Beyond Statistical Ritual: Theory in Psychological Science

چکیده
More than 40 years ago, Paul Meehl (1978) published a seminal critique of the state theorizing in psychological science. According to Meehl, quality theories had diminished preceding decades, resulting statistical methods standing for theoretical rigor. In this introduction special issue Theory Psychological Science, we apply Meehl’s account contemporary We suggest that by time writing, psychology found itself midst crisis is typical maturing sciences, which been guiding research were gradually cast into doubt. Psychologists faced with same general choice when worldviews fail: Face reality and pursue knowledge absence certainty, or shift emphasis toward sources synthetic certainty. psychologists have too often chosen latter option, substituting certainties theory-guided research, much manner as Scholastic scholars did centuries ago. Drawing from our contributors, go on make recommendations how science may fully reengage theory-based

Statistical Ritual Versus Knowledge Accrual in Wildlife Science
I hypothesized that statistical ritual has supplanted knowledge accrual as the sine qua non of wildlife science. Under the hypothesis, I deduced occurrence of 1) significance testing of the obvious and inconsequential, 2) quantitative debasement of research problems, and 3) publication of papers that largely lacked information but were methodologically impeccable. Articles in past and recent wi...
متن کاملBeyond statistical inference: a decision theory for science.
Traditional null hypothesis significance testing does not yield the probability of the null or its alternative and, therefore, cannot logically ground scientific decisions. The decision theory proposed here calculates the expected utility of an effect on the basis of (1) the probability of replicating it and (2) a utility function on its size. It takes significance tests--which place all value ...

" Justification, in the vernacular language of philosophy of science, refers to the evaluation, defense, and confirmation of claims of truth. In this article, we examine some aspects of the rhetoric of justification, which in part draws on statistical data analysis to shore up facts and inductive inferences. There are a number of problems of methodological spirit and substance that in the past ...
متن کاملEvolutionary Systems Theory: A Unifying Meta-Theory of Psychological Science
Psychology is a theoretically heterogeneous discipline seeking a single, cohesive framework to unite the subdisciplines. To address this issue, I propose a hierarchical metatheory of psychological science that synthesizes neo-Darwinian selectionist thinking and dynamic systems theory by organizing evolutionary psychology, evolutionary developmental biology, developmental psychobiology, and the ...
